Living spaces often reflect the personalities and lifestyles of those who inhabit them. Todd Selby’s 2024 book, The Selby Comes Home, captures this idea by showcasing the homes of 41 families where creativity, family life, and everyday chaos coexist. This collection reveals how artists, writers, and makers design their environments to embrace imperfection and the lively presence of children, pets, and roommates. The book offers a fresh perspective on interior design, focusing on real life rather than polished lifeless perfection.

The magic Todd creates is both beautiful and intimate. I've admired his work since I discovered him years ago while working at a gallery shortly after college. I would often look at his photos of people in their natural settings as an escape or a vision of where I wanted to be. His work inspires with its unique way of capturing people living life just a bit differently, highlighting the true beauty of everyday moments. Thank you for including our little team in our Brooklyn workshop home in this wonderful book. Check it out—there are so many cool stories captured in a way only he can.

Many people think of creative spaces as tidy studios or minimalist retreats. The Selby Comes Home challenges this by presenting homes full of color, texture, and found treasures that the families live with everyday and that tell the real stories of their lives. These are not showrooms but lived-in spaces where creativity flows alongside daily routines.

Families featured in the book often use their homes as places to inspire work and play. For example, one artist’s studio might be filled with paint-splattered furniture and children’s drawings pinned to the walls. Creativity does not require order or silence; it actually thrives in environments that allow for mess and spontaneity to experience and create.

One of the most striking themes in the book is the celebration of imperfection. Instead of hiding clutter or mess, these families incorporate it into their design. Toys, books, and art supplies become part of the décor, reflecting the dynamic nature of real family life.

This attitude encourages readers to rethink their own spaces. Instead of aiming for a flawless home, it suggests focusing on comfort and authenticity. The presence of children and pets is not a design obstacle but an opportunity to create a warm, inviting, real life of real art making.

Todd Selby’s signature style includes personal questionnaires and hand-drawn illustrations that accompany each home tour. These are the best part sometimes, because it gives a feeling of real connection to the art and love that is happening in each families everyday life,

Illustrations are the best touch, highlighting unique details or quirky objects found in each space. This combination of photography, text, and art creates a rich, engaging experience for readers who want more than just pictures of perfect homes.

In today’s world, many people juggle work, family, and creative pursuits under one roof. The Selby Comes Home reflects this reality by highlighting homes that accommodate multiple roles and personalities. It encourages readers to find beauty in the everyday mess and to design spaces that support their unique lifestyles.

The book also challenges traditional ideas of interior design by focusing on authenticity rather than trends. It reminds us that a home’s value lies in how it feels and functions for those who live there, not in how it looks to others. The beauty of the perfectly imperfect and all the layers of realness, that make something that much more beautiful and human.
